Proposals at Toft Green will provide a new Purpose-Built Music Venue and Grade A offices on the site of the former Fibbers Nightclub.
Located within the York Central Historic Core Conservation Area , the existing building at 3-5 Toft Green is assumed to be the original coach house and gardens to Micklegate House - a Grade I listed townhouse and regarded as the most important example of a Georgian residence South-West of the River Ouse. But after years of significant alterations and fragmented use, both as a leisure and entertainment venue, the fabric of the building was in disrepair and the appearance deemed detrimental to the area, specifically to Micklegate House.
Vincent & Partners worked in close collaboration with our clients North Star and Toft Green Developments Ltd to submit plans to transform the dilapidated building into a striking development with roof terrace and landscaping.
The front elevation of 3-5 Toft Green has been designed sympathetically to reflect the historic character on the southern side of the street. The façade has responds to the prevailing Toft Green characteristics through use of well -proportioned windows and contemporary brick detailing. Rusticated brick piers and five large openings at ground level serve to add vibrancy to the streetscape whilst reflecting the heritage of the site.
By contrast, to the rear elevation the Vincent & Partners team applied a contemporary approach to the design. A faceted sculptural timber clad façade creates a lightweight, subservient language which provides a harmonious backdrop to Micklegate House and mitigates overlooking of the neighbouring properties. The design also incorporates a private roof-top terrace, in homage to the site’s former use as a garden.
Planning consent for the scheme was obtained in December 2020. Vincent & Partners provided full architectural services in the role of lead consultant.
