St Leonard's Hospice

New donations centre for hospice charity’s retail arm

The retail arm of St Leonards Hospice had outgrown its existing donations centre and it was no longer fit for purpose. This project provides the charity with a purpose built donations centre at a newly-constructed warehouse unit at Marrtree Business Park to the north of York. It consolidates a number of operations into one space, improves efficiency and will help drive income growth.

About our client
St. Leonard’s Hospice is an independent charity, providing specialist palliative care and support for local people with life-limiting illnesses. The hospice has been providing care in York and the local community for 40 years. The care they provide is free with income coming from donations, a small amount of public funding and their charity shops. The first St. Leonard’s Hospice Charity Shop opened up in 1991 and there are now 14 shops.

Our role
We have guided this project from feasibility stage through to the production of detailed construction information, contractor selection and the monitoring of works on site. We have carefully detailed the fit out of the warehouse unit to ensure the new donations centre enables the charity to scale its operation.

Engaging clients to understanding their needs
The success of this project comes from a deep understanding of our client’s charitable and commercial operations, their organisational structure, and their vision for how the donations centre would ideally operate. We carried out extensive research into their existing set-up and held a number of workshops and building visits to similar facilities with key staff members to understand how their operations and translate that into the interior design of their new donations centre.
