New landmark headquarters building for children’s charity
This project creates a new home for children’s charity The Island. The scheme will, for the first time, provide them with dedicated and purpose-built facilities. This will enable The Island to greatly expand and enhance their work.
About our client
The Island is a charity in York providing support for disadvantaged, vulnerable and isolated children and young people. Their vision is to support, guide and positively influence the lives of every single young person in York, regardless of their socio-economic circumstances or life experiences.

Our role
We were appointed after winning an invited design competition. We organised a public consultation prior to submitting a planning application and obtained approval at planning committee stage. The project is progressing and we are providing full architectural services and on-going support on site. A key consideration from the outset of the project has been the massing and positioning of the building within the site. Our plans sensitively locate and integrate the internal spaces within an extensively landscaped and highly sustainable site.
Listening through collaboration
A series of workshops were held throughout the design process with staff and young people to help establish the brief and shape the design and layout of the building and surrounding site. We are continuing this collaborative process so that young people stay involved right through to the construction of the building itself. This helps us build trust and really understand their needs and create the best possible new home for The Island.
