Oak Farm
Redundant agricultural buildings become a stunning home
Oak Farm is part of the original Hagg Farm which has since been divided to include Blue Bell Barn, Hagg Farmhouse and Oak Farm. This project extended and renovated one set of farm buildings to create a large family home. As much of the original structures and character were retained and repaired as possible. The design sensitively integrates minimal, modern interventions that reflect a rural aesthetic, preserving the historic fabric of the site. Oak Farm was a winner in the residential category at the York Design Awards 2024.
Our role
Following a successful planning process, we completed building regulation drawings and assisted with appointing local construction firm York Builder to carry out the build. Our services also included contract admin. Collaborating with Green Building Renewables, we adopted a fabric-first approach to refurbishment, incorporating sustainable technologies such as a ground source heat pump and an extensive solar PV array. This combination of innovative design and sustainability has garnered the project high praise and recognition.
Working with your listed building
York Architectural Trust provided a Heritage Statement during the planning process and identified tadpole shaped charring marks on the timber trusses widely described as taper burn marks. These types of markings are generally interpreted as ritual protection marks against lightening and fire. Their purpose was to act as a sympathetic magic to ward off malignant or accidental fires. The client decided to retain these historic features as a talking point in their new home.
