Poppleton Church
Successful consultation and fundraising leads to phased masterplan
Poppleton Methodist Church is undergoing a transformation in four phases. Phases 1 and 2 are finished and include a new church entrance and new hall with a retractable stage for performances. The hall is independent from the church with dedicated toilets and storage facilities. The works included an air source heat pump and highly insulated timber framed construction to improve sustainability. Phases 3 and 4 will make the remainder of the building entirely wheel chair accessible and will include within a central hub a community café, larger kitchen and dedicated meeting rooms.
About our client
The original Poppleton Methodist Chapel was built in 1817. A bigger chapel was built in 1889 with further expansion in the 1970’s and 80’s. ‘Ruach’ is the church’s term for describing their response to the changing demands placed on the church community in the 21st Century. After much consultation and fundraising, the phased development plan was agreed with the goal of rejuvenating the church to help meet the needs of the community.
Our role
We were appointed to redesign and refurbish Poppleton Methodist Church. Once planning approval was secured, we have provided full architectural services, currently overseeing the second phase of the build across the four phases of the development plan.
Communication is critical
Poppleton Methodist Church plays a significant role in the local community including partnerships with local schools and doctors’ surgeries. Embarking on such a major transformation is a huge step for the church. We have assisted wherever possible to make the process as easy as possible. Communication is absolutely critical to all projects, but especially so when our client is the custodian of such an important asset.
