The Old Vicarage
Renovation and extension of a Grade II listed village house
The Old Vicarage is a beautiful Grade II listed house in Thorganby designed by Edward Blore, the architect credited with completing John Nash's design for Buckingham Palace. The property had been unsympathetically adapted over time.
About our client
Our clients on this project are developers and entrepreneurs with whom we have worked on other projects.
Our Role
We helped our client to work with their listed building rather than against it. To help them to live with their listed building rather than making the property live with them. This helps them get the most out of the building while respecting the building’s listed status. The constraints become positives rather than negatives as initially thought.
Getting the most from a listed building
This project is another good example of the challenge of buying, owning and working on a listed building. We always push as far as we possibly can to try and achieve the maximum for our clients. But, we also have to balance their needs with other responsibilities, such as the appropriate care for listed buildings. We lead our client in areas where we are experts. We sometimes have to have difficult conversations with our clients early on. Sometimes we lose jobs as a result or we walk away from jobs in good conscience. This didn’t happy here because of good communications and trust between us and our clients.
