Hunmanby Community Centre

Sensitive alterations to a historic community centre

Constructed in 1905 as a primary school, Hunmanby community centre is an important landmark building within the Hunmanby conservation area. The project proposes repairs to and restoration of the original building, with a focus on improved energy performance. Three contemporary green roof extensions and one outbuilding replace inappropriate historic additions to the property.

About our client

Hunmanby Parish Council are located within the rural village of Hunmanby, part of the North Yorkshire Council catchment area. The Council is committed to supporting local initiatives and leases a significant portion of its premises to the Community Centre Management Committee, providing a hub for community activities and engagement.

 Our role

We were initially engaged to assess the existing building, developing alternate proposals which help to secure the long term future of the building through sensitive repairs and extensions. Phasing was an important factor in the design process, with the proposal maintaining continued operation of hired spaces for community use during any major maintenance and construction works. We have submitted the planning application for this proposal and are currently awaiting response.

Responding to heritage

Interventions have been carefully considered in terms of materiality, scale, and form, to be complementary and subservient to the original building. The contemporary appearance of the proposed extensions and outbuildings ensures they remain visually distinct from the original building, whilst green roofs help to soften their impact. Relocating the existing garage will restore views from the principal façade through to the trees beyond, enhancing both the conservation area and the overall streetscape.
