Project Spotlight - Beck House
Beck House is an elegant and inventive bespoke family home for a private client in York. The split-level property is located on Tadcaster Road, directly to the south of York City Centre, on a back-land site behind a series of large Victorian-era properties.
The external walls, partially retaining, were constructed using insulated concrete formwork, providing a high-performing external fabric. The property also incorporates low-carbon technologies including solar PV’s on the south-facing roof pitches and an air source heat pump, taking a fabric-first approach to provide a highly sustainable and impressive family home.
The building is organised into two distinct, crossing pitched-roof volumes, with an open, light filled entrance space adjacent to their intersection. On entry, there is level access to a large kitchen & dining space within an impressive storey and a half volume, while the central staircase leads down to a large living room which opens out onto a sunken external terrace, gym and spare bedroom.
The main bedroom spaces are located within the room in the roof, with a master suite and two additional family bedrooms, each with en-suites and large windows on the gable elevations. The palette of materials draws on the local context and includes a mixture of brick, timber and render, with each material employed to visually reinforce the split-level concept.
