North Street Hotel

Proposed sustainable low carbon city hotel

North Street Hotel is a proposed highly sustainable hotel development on the site of a former print works in the centre of York. The 82-bed hotel will develop an underused, brownfield piece of land and improve access and urban fabric immediately surrounding the site. A large green wall to be installed on one gable acting as a marker for the proposals and as way-finding along a newly 'greened route' to the hotel main entrance.

About our client
The client for this project is a special purpose vehicle. SPVs are an alternative fundraising structure that allow multiple investors to pool their capital and isolate financial risk to make a single investment, in this case the purchase and development of a property. We are experienced in working directly with individual SVPs and through specialists who structure SVPs on behalf of client investors.

Our role
Our designs reference the history of the site and warehouse typologies in the vicinity through its form and proposed materials, utilising a contextual brickwork façade and a metal saw-tooth roof that allows for photovoltaics on its south facing pitches. We secured planning permission at committee stage and advised our on the project. The sustainability ambitions for the project include targeting BREEAM Excellent and net zero carbon, supporting the council’s ambition for the city to be carbon neutral by 2030.
