Clifton Alliance Cricket Club

Improved, inclusive facilities for local cricket club

This is a vital project for a cricket club in York, of which we are a sponsor. The club had for some time been tight on space. The changing rooms were small, there was nowhere for umpires to change and no separate changing room for women and girls. This new building contains better changing facilities for all, room for the scorers and for storage.

About our client
Clifton Alliance Cricket Club is based in the north York suburb of Clifton in North Yorkshire. It exists for people who love playing and watching cricket at all levels. The club has a focus on coaching for kids and growing the number of women and girls participating. They punch above their weight, playing against some of the bigger amateur clubs in their league.

Our role
Although a small project, it was challenging because the club is located in the York greenbelt. York planners are very protective of the greenbelt and were initially negative because they did not want to set a president. We built a case and successfully argued that the building was needed to allow growth of the club and because it is an outdoor sporting facility it benefits the local community.

Genuine dialogue
Sometimes a project isn’t about the architecture as much as it’s about finding a way of getting what the clients wants through dialogue. We created a convincing argument to counter what were legitimate concerns. We worked closely with the volunteers who run the club, planners and other stakeholders to break down barriers and do everything in our power to show that this project should go ahead.
