Brackenhill
Stunning contemporary eco-house
Brackenhill is a bespoke, one-off new build house for a private client in a rural setting on the outskirts of York. It is an eco-friendly, modern family home built on a site formally occupied by commercial premises. The design focuses on craftmanship and simplicity.
We put developed plans for a modern and striking new home in close consultation with our client. Planning consent was secured to demolish the disused commercial unit and erect a new-build dwelling on the site in March 2018. We provided full architectural services on the project, which was completed in June 2019.
Sustainability and green living at the core of the project
Our client was keen to explore sustainable construction methods to realise their vision of an eco-friendly home that was practical, achievable and long-lasting. The property has a precision-engineered timber frame that is super-insulated. A Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery system was cleverly incorporated. This whole-house system continuously extracts stale, moist air from the building and draw in fresh, filtered air from outside. It also recovers heat from the outgoing air to warm the incoming air, reducing energy consumption. A BioDisc treatment plant was installed to lower running costs and allow wastewater to efficiently discharge into the local watercourse.
