Permission for New Dwelling and Remodelling in York’s Historic Core

Planning permission has been granted for a new dwelling and extensive remodelling of 53 Goodramgate in the heart of York’s historic core. The listed building, which has housed Watkinsons Shoes for over 50 years, will benefit from a new shopfront, internal alterations and provision of a courtyard.

The new dwelling, an adaptive re-use of the warehouse to the rear of the site, will benefit from a courtyard garden and provide a rare and unique new home in a prime historic location.

Following productive discussions with the council, it was determined that the proposals would “constitute a significant improvement in the current arrangement, in terms of built forms, design quality and materials, enhancing the architectural and historic legibility of the listed building”.

Vincent & Partners have been involved from RIBA Stage 0, advising on potential strategies and considerations, developing the project brief with the client through design options, and refining the proposals leading to a successful planning application.
