Making A Difference

Lots of companies say they want to make a difference. It’s often part of their corporate social responsibility or social value information on a website.

Why are we, at Vincent & Partners, focused on making a difference? What does ‘making a difference’ actually mean for a firm of architects?

In this article we explain what “making a difference” means to us and how we are incorporating this into the way we operate as an architectural practice. We also give some examples of how we’re already making a difference and how we’re planning to do more in the future.

What does making a difference mean to us?

We want to develop and grow our business. That means focusing on our strengths and our skills and engaging our clients and our team as we grow. We want to grow in the right way and so we’ve done a lot of work on our values, to really understand what’s important to us and to those we work with.

Having undergone a detailed analysis of our working methods, ethos and driving forces, we have been able to encapsulate our values as:

  • Empathy          Understanding clients, sites, buildings, settings, heritage, environment.
  • Responsibility  Going further than Building Regs. Sustainable architecture, social value.
  • Integrity          Being open and honest. Behaving in the right way.
  • Capability       Providing creative solutions, unlocking value, delivery.

Our values underpin everything we do, including how we work, our approach and how we act.

By applying our values we can make a difference to:

  • our clients
  • our team
  • our profession
  • future talent
  • the environment
  • the built environment
  • society

Making a difference for our clients

We put people at the heart of every brief, translating complex processes into clear, confident steps. From securing planning for the Tadcaster Road scheme, to guiding The Island from concept to approval, we act as trusted partners. We prioritise listening to our clients – really listening so we can anticipate needs, advocate on clients’ behalf, and add value. We embrace our clients’ challenges and tackle issues head-on, providing thoughtful solutions. And, we also take the initiative and lead where necessary.

Making a difference for our team

We believe the best work comes from a team that feels supported, inspired and challenged in equal measure. We invest in CPD, encourage leadership at every level, and celebrate each win together, whether that’s an award for The Island or success in securing projects in London. Our studio culture values respect, wellbeing and a shared sense of purpose.

Making a difference in the architecture profession

We contribute to the evolution of architectural practice, hosting conversations like The Role With No Name at UKREiiF and engaging with industry peers on how to serve clients better. We hold ourselves to RIBA’s highest standards, demonstrating that architecture can be both commercially rigorous and socially responsible. We continuously learn and develop, we use the right tools at the right times and in the right places, and we innovate.

Making a difference for future talent in architecture

We nurture the next generation of architects and technologists through mentoring, placements and exposure to real-world projects. Recent new team members in both York and London have bought fresh expertise in areas including hospitality design, sustainability, adaptive reuse and international best practice, broadening our perspective and strengthening our collective skill set.

Making a difference for the environment

We design with responsibility for the planet in mind, championing adaptive reuse, minimising embodied carbon and specifying materials for durability and performance. Projects like The Castle Hotel in Windsor demonstrate our belief that reimagining existing buildings can deliver both environmental and cultural value.

Making a difference for the built environment

Our work strengthens the character and functionality of the places we touch. We thrive in heritage contexts in York and in London, whether on listed buildings or in Conservation Areas. We also deliver contemporary buildings that sit respectfully within a historic setting. We approach each project with a sense of ownership and pride.

Making a difference for society

Architecture can be a powerful tool for social good. We design spaces that foster connection, inclusion and opportunity, like The Island, which will be a purpose-built headquarters for a youth charity, complete with spaces for sport, performance, learning and wellbeing. For us, the measure of success is the positive change our buildings bring to the lives they touch.

Summary

Our values of empathy, responsibility, integrity and capability drive how we work and how we act. We put people first, take ownership and always strive to do what is right. We are driven to achieve for ourselves and our clients and for society. We demystify architecture so everyone can benefit.
