Fishergate Project makes Local News

The original frontage of a Grade II listed apartment, designed and renovated by Vincent & Brown and clients Inglehurst Property, made local news yesterday, as it was hailed as being home to one of York's ‘Best Ghost Signs’.

Editor for The York Press, Maxine Gordon, described the signage as ‘one of the most well-known and decorative ghost signs in the city’.

Illustrated billboards and ornamental store frontages across the country, tell of long-gone businesses, and are often overlooked by passers-by. A growing movement to preserve and restore the faded decorative artworks has been gaining traction amongst York’s culturally savvy citizens and local press. More often than not, ghost signs outlast the products or services they are advertising, as in the case of TM Oxtoby & Son, a former decorator’s shop in Fishergate, central York.

In 2019 Vincent & Brown were appointed by Inglehurst Property to renovate the first floor 3-bedroom apartment within the Grade II listed building which sits within walking distance of York’s iconic Clifford's Tower. Special measures were taken to protect the historic, illustrative signage during completion of the works. The unique property lies within the York Central Historic Core Conservation Area and has unparalleled views of the Bar walls from the living room bay window.
